Golden fibre. Greener future.

The photo project documents jute cultivation in the fields of West Bengal, India, highlighting the fibre’s potential as a sustainable alternative to plastic and synthetic materials. While plastic waste continues to pollute land and water, jute is renewable, biodegradable, recyclable and has a relatively low carbon footprint. Known as the ‘golden fibre’ jute cultivation also contributes to soil conservation, fertility and carbon sequestration. A vital part of India’s rural economy, the jute industry provides livelihoods to millions of farmers, workers, artisans and others across its value chain. From cultivation and harvesting to processing and manufacturing jute supports both communities and sustainable economic opportunities. Through these photographs the project explores the relationship between environment, agriculture, labour and everyday life, while reflecting on how traditional natural fibres can contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
