Misread

Misread examines how femininity and beauty can become evidence used against the person who embodies them. It begins with the Chinese stereotype of the “flower vase,” which reduces a beautiful woman to an ornamental presence, and places it in dialogue with beauty bias and sexualised visibility in contemporary Western culture. A transparent water tank becomes an enlarged vase, display case and barrier. Water makes the body luminous and apparently weightless while restricting movement, breath and voice. Refraction shifts the face and gestures, suggesting that visibility is not the same as understanding. Flowers, dress and make-up remain deliberately present because the work does not ask women to abandon femininity in order to be treated as credible. The problem is not beauty, but the judgement attached to it. The sequence shifts attention toward the system of looking around her, asking whether it is the subject who has been misread, or the assumptions through which she is viewed.
